S. N. Arts, D. J. M. Commerce, B. N. S. Science College, Sangamner, Dist. Ahmednagar- 422605 Department of Zoology, At a Glance The Department of Zoology of Sangamner College, known for devotion, determination, sincerity & quality had a humble beginning in 1966. Today, it has emerged as one of the best learning centers in University of Pune. The first batch of graduate level students was admitted during 1978-79. Overcoming adverse factors such as cut throat competition with other popular subjects, poor infrastructure, very limited number of students offering the subject at S. Y. B. Sc. Level & so called less job opportunities, the department struggled & succeeded in survival. It gives us immense pleasure to present the profile of the department for the period 2004-10, the post NAAC era.
As indicated in the table the student enrollment has consistently dropped. This is the scenario in most of degree colleges. It is due to following reasons: a. The opening of many non- grantable medical, paramedical Colleges & business institutes. b. Preference given by students to professional courses such as M. B. B. S., B. A. M. S., B. D. S., B. H. M. S., B. P. Th., B.B.A., B.C.A. & B.C.S. etc. c. Introduction of B.Sc. (Biotechnology) & B. Sc. (Microbiology) Courses.
2. University exam Results: Results of the exams conducted Results of the exams conducted by the University reflect the standard of students as well as instructions. Results of all courses of all classes were always more than that of the University. This is due to whole hearted involvement of teachers in teaching, motivation given to the taught & the efforts taken by the students. It is seen from the data that as students march ahead from F.Y. to T. Y., the performance improved in an impressive manner. Most of the graduate level students have secured distinction in the final examination. Large number of students were selected for postgraduate studies in different renowned institutes including University departments. Year wise & class wise result is as follows:

4. Research Activity: Zoology Department is an undergraduate department with just 5 staff members. Of these, 3 have research experience. At present, 1 research project financed by BCUD, Pune & 1 mini research project funded by the college management are in progress. The ideal concept, Project per person cannot be implemented because 1 member is due to retire & 2 members are temporary. These members, though desirous & capable of undertaking research cannot get financial assistance from any source. A total of 18 research papers were published by the teachers- 6 in International Journals & 12 in National Journals. The following tables show the research activities and number of publications of the number of publications of the department: Research Activities of the Department
Research Publications of the Department
The students of the Department also participated enthusiastically in the ‘Avishkar’ competition ever since it was introduced by University of Pune in 2006. Since then, 2 projects were selected at University Level, 1 at district Level & 1 at state level. The following table gives the details of participation of students of the department in ‘Avishkar’ competition:

Participation in University Administrative work The teachers of the department, not only made the college administration, a smooth conduct, but also participated efficiently in University administrative work. Following chart summarizes the effective participation of staff in University administrative work:
9. Laboratory Facilities: · Microscopes: Dissecting, Compound, Phase Contrast, Stereoscopic · Photomicrographic Unit · Colorimeter, Spectrophotometer · pH meter · BOD incubators · Hot air ovens · Shaker cum incubator · Electrophoresis Units · Motorized Homogenizer · Incubators · UV Transilluminator · Soil/Water Analysis Kit · Microtomes · Bee Keeping equipments · Digital Balances · Haemocytometer, Haemoglobinometers etc. · Deionizer · Distilled water stills · Centrifuges · OHP · Refrigerators · AC Unit · Computer & Printer etc. 10. Expenditure on laboratory facilities The department strongly believes in ‘learning by doing’. A departmental Library with 206 excellent books costing Rs. 97,181.50 4. Excellent laboratory facilities. 5. Constant Encouragement to students. Weaknesses 1. Inadequate number of students at T. Y. level because of stiff competition from other subjects. 2. Inspite of running M. Sc. Successfully for three years, it had to be closed down due to lack of students in sufficient number Opportunities 1. Students with B. Sc. in Zoology can now opt for variety of P.G. courses such as M .Sc. (Zoology), M. Sc. (Bioinformatics), M. Sc. (Biotechnology), M. Sc. (Clinical Research) etc. 2. The department hopes to establish a research center in the near future Threats 1. The only threat is the sharp fall in the number of students offering Zoology as a subject at T. Y. Level. 2. Many students prefer professional degree courses such as B. B. A., B.C. A. after XII . 13. Future Plans · Enrichment of the Museum · Uploading of more study material on College website. · Publication of Laboratory Practical manual. · Setting up of equipped culture room · Recognition as Research Laboratory · Setting up laboratory animals breeding center and generation of funds through sale to other educational institutes. · Undertaking project on faunistic studies of Sangamner tehsil. · Purchase of ICT tools. · Tutorial for availing students admission to National Laboratories for higher studies
