Department of Zoology, At a Glance

The Department of Zoology of Sangamner College, known for devotion, determination, sincerity & quality had a humble beginning in 1966. Today, it has emerged as one of the best learning centers in University of Pune. The first batch of graduate level students was admitted during 1978-79. Overcoming adverse factors such as cut throat competition with other popular subjects, poor infrastructure, very limited number of students offering the subject at S. Y. B. Sc. Level & so called less job opportunities, the department struggled & succeeded in survival. It gives us immense pleasure to present the profile of the department for the period 2004-10, the post NAAC era.

As indicated in the table the student enrollment has consistently dropped. This is the scenario in most of degree colleges. It is due to following reasons:

a.       The opening of many non- grantable medical, paramedical Colleges & business institutes.

b.      Preference given by students to professional courses such as M. B. B. S., B. A. M. S.,    B. D. S., B. H. M. S., B. P. Th., B.B.A., B.C.A. & B.C.S. etc.

c.       Introduction of B.Sc. (Biotechnology) & B. Sc. (Microbiology) Courses.

2.     University exam Results:

Results of the exams conducted Results of the exams conducted by the University reflect the standard of students as well as instructions. Results of all courses of all classes were always more than that of the University. This is due to whole hearted involvement of teachers in teaching, motivation given to the taught & the efforts taken by the students. It is seen from the data that as students march ahead from F.Y. to T. Y., the performance improved in an impressive manner. Most of the graduate level students have secured distinction in the final examination. Large number of students were selected for postgraduate studies in different renowned institutes including University departments. Year wise & class wise result is as follows:

4.      Research Activity:

Zoology Department is an undergraduate department with just 5 staff members. Of these, 3 have research experience. At present, 1 research project financed by BCUD, Pune & 1 mini research project funded by the college management are in progress. The ideal concept, Project per person cannot be implemented because 1 member is due to retire & 2 members are temporary. These members, though desirous & capable of undertaking research cannot get financial assistance from any source. A total of 18 research papers were published by the teachers- 6 in International Journals & 12 in National Journals.

The following tables show the research activities and number of publications of the number of publications of the department:
